"Accessibility is embedded in our DNA" – Interview with Suzanne Brackmann
In celebration of Brackmann's 20th anniversary, we are sharing the stories of our people. Suzanne Brackmann, founder and founding partner, kicks off the series.
Suzanne, you founded Brackmann in 2004. What led you to make that choice?
Before founding Brackmann, I worked for many years at a large law firm. When that firm split, my office location moved from Rotterdam to Amsterdam. Although I moved to Amsterdam as well, I began to feel that I wanted something different: to work at the highest specialist level while maintaining a good balance with personal life. That led to the founding of Brackmann. Immediately after registering with the Chamber of Commerce, I started working on the Second Maasvlakte project at the Port of Rotterdam. Great assignments followed, and everything fell into place: this was the right choice.
What distinguishes the firm for you?
What I stand for is accessibility, both to clients and within the organization. It is precisely this approach that has resulted in what I see as our greatest success: a firm that excels in content and ranks among the top in the Netherlands, with a human and ethical character. When I look at the group of people who make up Brackmann today, I am very proud that this is embedded in all of us. We place great value on this when attracting new people.
Speaking of new people, there are currently several vacancies available.
Yes, that's right. While growth is never an end goal, we are ready for the next phase as a firm. The work is there, and we also have the knowledge to serve clients from start to finish during projects. We will maintain our focus on procurement, construction, and area development, but expanding our services with related areas of law, such as administrative and environmental law, fits seamlessly with that.
You often say, "Go the extra mile in every case, for every client." How do you stay physically and mentally fit to deliver this effort every day?
I exercise a lot. Rowing is a sports passion of mine, and I also practice powerlifting. My family also keeps me sharp, ensuring I get enough relaxation. We go for walks regularly. The physical relaxation and also the ‘not working,’ which is always my approach on weekends, provides me with the right balance.
Lastly, you've been in the profession for over 30 years. Do you still enjoy your work?
Yes, absolutely. At the end of each workday, I feel good. The work is never finished, but knowing that I can get back to it the next day still gives me energy. Absolutely.
